Choosing a reliable home improvement contractor for your exterior home improvements or general home improvement services is not an easy undertaking. As a homeowner, your worries go beyond just keeping the project on schedule and within budget. You’re likely more concerned about how reputed and dependable the person you choose to work on your home is.

Here’s a list of the top things you should consider before you make the big decision.

    1. Interview multiple candidates
As with most things, you don’t always find the right fit on the first try. Even if you do, it’s always a good idea to check your options before you make a commitment. The last thing you want is to choose one, and then eye someone else.

    2. Experience matters
No matter how eager and well-intentioned someone may be, there’s nothing that beats firsthand, real-life experience. Even when skills wow you, be sure to choose a contractor who has a couple of projects and years of experience under his toolbelt.

    3. References matter even more
There’s little that’s more valuable than a glowing recommendation from a past project to cement your faith and decision. A good (or poor) reference can be the decider in most cases, and you shouldn’t decide on your contractor without hearing them.

    4. Licenses
Every dependable contractor, including the contractors at Hynes, need to have the right licences from the local municipality and state in place to conduct business. Request to see these liceneces before work starts so you can ensure that everything is in order and above board.

    5. Insurance
Permits, licensing, and insurance – the really boring stuff in a home improvement project. But really really expensive nonetheless. While the number and types of permits change based on where you live, your contractor should be able to help you with the formalities.

    6. Background check
Disclosing any ongoing legal matter should be part of the contract. And while it may feel covert, knowing more about your contractor will save both parties a ton of time and effort. If there’s something afoul with your contractor, there’d likely be news of it at the Better Business Bureau. And you’re well within your rights to ask about it.

    7. Get a bid
Don’t sign on the dotted line without getting an estimate of the project. More bids the better. Because while it’s nice to have a buffer, surprise costs can easily make a project go awry. By getting a formidable bid, you can plan your expenses better.

If you go through this checklist, you’ll be sure to get a hold of a reputable and dependable contractor.
